Overview

To compare the best website builders on ease of use, templates, customer service, and value for money, we tried to build the same site on each platform. Check out the results here.

Coda2 is a web editor, file manager, and SSH client rolled into one. With Coda2, web programmers get a clean, well-organized, color-coded text editor with a built-in preview function so they can easily swap back and forth between the source code and what their target audience will actually see. Each programming language used is color-coded, and codes are automatically folded, indented, and completed. It also features a Search and Replacement function not common to text editors, as well as a pop-up function with gradations and rounded corners.

But Coda2 isn’t just a glorified text editor. It’s also a file manager and SSH client, so it’s easy for you to directly edit files on your local hard drive, FTP server, SFTP, WebDAV, or even Amazon S3 server. You can move, rename, copy, or transfer files between servers. Plus, with the built-in Webkit preview function, you can check out how your pages and scripts look and debug them before you upload them to your server and make them live for the World Wide Web.

A few other nifty features: Coda2 has a Clip function, which means you can register your frequently-used character strings and insert them anywhere with your pre-specified shortcuts. This will cut down the time spent on repetitive code strings. Plus, Coda2 also has a Terminal function and a MySQL editor, so you can connect directly to an SSH server and send commands or check the structure and add data to your MySQL databases. All this is, of course, conveniently synced to your website’s server, so it’s easy to keep your website updated.

Coda2 is designed for Mac users and is only available via direct sales. Users who have previously purchased a copy of Coda2 through the Mac App Store can simply download the upgraded version without having to purchase a new license.

Before making a decision, it is advisable to read a comparison of the best website builders by my colleague to ensure that you are aware of potentially better alternatives and not overlooking any valuable options.
