Host Geek invites you to let its geeks “take care of your web hosting in Australia.” This hosting provider is 100% proud of its Australian heritage, and it offers an exclusive deal to Australian startups.

Overview

1
In business since 2005, Host Geek has more than a decade of web hosting experience. It believes that whatever technical challenges its customers face, the chances are good that its team of geeks has seen it all before, therefore they are equipped to offer responsive and reliable technical support.

Host Geek is based in Australia. It uses servers located in its home country, plus Singapore, and (for SHOUTcast hosting) the United States.

Features and Ease of Use

Host Geek’s shared hosting services come in two kinds: standard Australian Shared Hosting and Specialised Hosting for Magento, WordPress, and Joomla. The SSD-based hosting packages provide the following features:

  • 99.9% uptime SLA
  • Free domain registration on the top two plans
  • From 10 GB to 60 GB bandwidth
  • Either 10 or unlimited add-on domains
  • Let’s Encrypt SSL
  • Daily backups

Host Geek provides the Installatron application installer in each cPanel account so you can install CMS software or other applications with ease. This is a big boon for beginners who don’t want to deal with uploading files and manually installing software.

Unfortunately, there is no website builder, which would be another boon for beginners, and this may be because this company offers WordPress website design as one of its services. There is also no mention of support for the Python programming language, but you do get PHP and Perl support with the hosting plans.

Pricing and Support

Host Geek’s shared hosting plan prices are slightly higher than the industry average. Many alternative shared hosting providers offer higher resources at lower cost. However, you might yet consider this company to offer good value for money when you consider its use of SSD storage, its SLA-backed uptime, plus a free domain and free SSL.

Plans can be bought on monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, annual or biannual subscriptions. There is no free trial for you to try before you buy, but the 30-day money-back guarantee should give you some peace of mind.

Host Geek’s support team is available 7 days per week, but not 24 hours per day, and you can contact the team via live chat, telephone, ticket, and email. I received an appropriate response in about ten hours when I tested the live chat outside of office hours:

  • 30-day money-back guarantee

charged me for 5 months of service without authorisation

I have been with this company since 2010, however encountered issues in the past 24 months where I have been charged without authorisation. Most recently 2 months ago I was charged on my card until my card was empty. No response from the company despite 2 calls and messages, and 7 emails. I have now had to lodge a refund request through my bank. I can see that I am not the first to experience this! Absolutely disgusting. I would not recommend this company at all. It was such a good company for many years but not anymore

Sham Company

This is a Sham Company who does not give you the service paid for nor will it refund your monies when you cancel. No one ever answers the phone and emails are all automated. Consumer affairs need to be involved.

Unreliable and very poor support. No longer recommended

Host Geek used to be good value but it’s gone downhill. I’ve had many issues lately, particularly with email. There’s no support outside business hours and response to support requests and tickets can sometimes take days.

Used to be great

This company used to be fantastic. Suddenly they started charging me for services I canceled years ago and I've had open support tickets for months. Ignore old reviews saying this company is good--I used to rave about them to everyone. Something has gone wrong. Not sure if the company sold or what. Essentially a scam now.

BAD SERVICES & CHEATER

They sent me an invoice ask for payment. They deducted again the payment from my card. After that, they never respond to messages and emails. They gave me login details that did not have my EPP code for switching my domain. I have sent them several emails asking for an EPP code, they did not reply. BEWARE OF CHEATER

When you start you can’t stop!!

everything was good until the day I ask them to shot down some server... They don't have forms to stop the services, so you are obliged to open a ticket on their website, and then they will say, ok, ok but at the end they don't cancel and continu to bill you. It is now 3 months Itried to get ride of them, but they are sticked on my blue card, and don't cancel my services. I will be obliged to stop my blue card !!!
