Avalon was founded in 1997 and now has thousands of customers, with offices in Croatia and the U.S. With Points of Presence (PoPs) around the world in its global content distribution network, the modern website is available in Croatian only.
Features and Ease of Use
Avalon sells a streamlined selection of shared hosting and VPS plans. Customers enjoy the following core features:
- 99.9% availability guarantee
- Automatic daily backups
- Domain registration available
- Up to 50 add-on domains
- Free SSL certificates
- Up to 50GB SSD disk space
- Unlimited monthly traffic available
Avalon includes several performance-enhancing features as standard with its packages. For instance, with servers co-located around the world and 20 PoPs, its Global Content Distribution Network (CDN) means your website load speed should be faster than average.
The servers use SSD storage, which is up to ten times as fast as regular HDD, and there’s also an industry average uptime guarantee of 99.9%, which is backed by compensation in the event of excessive downtime.
The usual features are all included e.g., HTML5, PHP, and MySQL databases, plus some less common ones like SSH and SFTP access. There’s a fairly standard one-click installer and compatibility with WordPress.
As Avalon uses the LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP) environment, if you’re looking for support for .NET, Ruby, Django, or “any other fancy development tool”, you’re out of luck. There also isn’t a website building tool, if that’s important to you, but you can pay Avalon to build your website for you instead.
Pricing and Support
The prices are relatively high compared to other providers. However, Avalon’s aim is to provide premium hosting, not budget plans. It’s not all bad, there’s a free SSL certificate included, but you do need to buy a domain name.
You can purchase website hosting in one-month or one-year terms, with a discount equivalent to one month if you purchase the latter. Plus, there’s a generous 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can get started risk-free.
Customer service for technical issues is available around the clock, while non-urgent inquiries are dealt with on weekdays from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. You can easily contact the team via email, phone, or ticket, although the latter requires login access. There’s a small FAQ section on the website if you don’t’ want to contact the team.
I emailed them around lunchtime on a Monday morning, but unfortunately, I didn’t receive a reply despite waiting for several days. It’s a shame because I would have liked to obtain more information about the server locations.
