Anthropic CEO: AI Will Write 90% of Code in 3 to 6 Months
In a bold projection, Dario Amodei, CEO of AI firm Anthropic, said artificial intelligence will evolve to write 90% of software code within the next three to six months. He added that AI may automate virtually all coding tasks within a year.
“If I look at coding, programming, which is one area where AI is making the most progress. What we are finding is that we’re 3 to 6 months from a world where AI is writing 90% of the code. And then in 12 months, we may be in a world where AI is writing essentially all of the code,” Amodei said at The CEO Speaker forum hosted by the Council of Foreign Relations (CFR).
Amodei’s view aligns with observations from other industry leaders. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang believes AI will reshape programming by making it intuitive and widely accessible. He sees coding evolving rather than becoming obsolete and highlights AI’s growing role in fields like agriculture and education.
Mike Krieger, co-founder of Instagram and current Chief Product Officer at Anthropic, also sees a shift coming. He predicts developers will transition from writing code to reviewing AI-generated code and ensuring it meets user needs.
AI expert Andrej Karpathy’s concept of “vibe coding” illustrates this change. It envisions a future where people use natural language to instruct computers, making programming more intuitive and accessible even for non-programmers.
Amodei’s forecast raises questions about the future of handwritten coding and AI’s impact on software engineer jobs. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, has warned that AI could impact 40% of global jobs, enhancing productivity in some areas while reducing or eliminating demand in others.
However, critics argue that while AI can generate code, it may lack the originality and deep understanding that human programmers have, potentially leading to generic or suboptimal results.
Despite these concerns, experts believe human developers will remain crucial. They are expected to focus on complex problem-solving, system architecture, ethical AI use, and addressing biases in AI-generated code.
Microsoft’s latest Work Trend Index report shows that AI isn’t just creating jobs for specialists but is becoming a necessary skill across industries.
Many experts agree that as AI advances, the collaboration between humans and machines will likely define the future of coding and other roles.
