Code Enigma is a community of creative souls and the technically brilliant, dedicated to building a better worldwide web. Greg Harvey, the Director of Code Enigma kindly agreed to an interview where he presented the company to our audience and explained how Code Enigma differs from other similar companies.
Please present Code Enigma to our audience
We’re
Code Enigma. We’re a small (ish) agency comprised of Drupal and hosting experts.
We make modern, usable, mobile-first websites that fit our clients’ needs. We are also specialists in implementing complex integrations.
We have accreditations from leading governing bodies for Drupal, Acquia, AWS, Information/Cyber Security and more.
Working With Code Enigma is a framework for working together. It can be applied to
any part of what we do, from deciding who makes the tea to delivering the most
complex development projects.
Fundamentally and crucially, it’s a framework that allows us to lead change. Predominantly
change in behavior in teams which ensures we stay close to our values:
- We’re experts
- We’re a community
- We’re all creative
- We do things deliberately
- We’re honest
Please describe the story behind the company: What sparked the idea, and how has it evolved so far?
I started out as a web developer for a London advertising agency, My career progressed into product management, first at a start-up called 2B Reputation Intelligence and then at Dow Jones Factiva. I worked extensively with design teams for much of the noughties, being part of the creative team for Nestlé, Ford Motor Company, Vodafone, and Accenture, to name a few.
In 2006, I joined the social media agency, Rareface, as Head of Development. I worked with Drupal on a number of projects, and in 2008 I formed his own agency, CMS Professionals, specializing entirely in Drupal development and has become well known in the Drupal community.
In 2010, CMS Professionals merged with Pilot Internet to form Code Enigma. I’m based in France and, aside from general business management, my current role sees me providing technical expertise during the consultancy phase of larger development projects and leading Code Enigma’s rapidly-growing DevOps, support, and hosting team. I also sometimes oversee the technical aspects of development projects and often takes breaks during the day to play the drums.
And so, with over 11 years in the business and hundreds of years of collective experience between us,
Code Enigma has tackled some of the most complex challenges in the Drupal world. We know how to build a solution and keep it alive once it’s done.
We’re proud to say that most of our clients have been with us for over 5 years. Public sector and government bodies, STEM organizations, educational institutions, charities, and not-for-profit groups (to name some) all benefit from working with us.

What is the mission of Code Enigma?
Simply, we’re a community of creative souls and the technically brilliant, dedicated to building a better world wide web.
What separates you from other similar companies?
We feel our deep Drupal expertise is one thing, closely followed by our dedication to security.
We’re the Drupal experts other specialists come to for help. We have vast experience in project recovery.
We’ve been there when a project has hit an unexpected problem. We have worked with both internal teams and other Drupal agencies to solve complex issues causing disruption to a project.
What’s more, we believe that as open-source advocates and Drupal champions, we must demonstrate the efforts that go into keeping the technologies we design and use safely.
We, therefore, do not compromise when it comes to the security of their services, and thus decided to obtain a formal accreditation to confirm that their system landscapes meet the highest standards.
How do you envision the future of your industry?
Using open-source methods, developers improve the software by detecting and resolving bugs in the code, updating it to work with new technology, and adding new features.
Building on one another’s accomplishments is an important part of open source values, and it’s crucial for future innovation.
It’s critical to be able to fix and improve on what others have done. However, the key to making open-source the software industry’s future is to actively invest in and prioritize these open source communities.
When it comes to the adoption of these tools, there is frequently a lack of organization. Establishing new code standards, introducing peer review, and focusing on security are all obstacles the industry will have to overcome in order to make the future a reality.
However, with major corporations such as IBM, Apple, Google, and now Microsoft supporting open-source, these challenges may be resolved through collaboration, which is, after all, what it’s all about.
Not only is the code itself a significant aspect of open source, but so is the sharing of knowledge and the kind of business challenges it helps to solve.
