Tilda is a somewhat intuitive block-based website builder that doesn’t require coding. It was initially developed to create simple one-page sites and portfolios, but that’s changed over the years. Now, you can create all kinds of websites with Tilda, including online stores, blogs, and other projects.

The platform is available in nine different languages: English, Chinese, Spanish, German, French, Russian, Japanese, Ukrainian, and Portuguese.

Tilda is evolving, and it has a lot to offer. But does it have everything you need for a solid web presence? Can it help you build a website that stands out? That’s what I set out to learn.

A Limited Template Library

Tilda has more than 200 templates to choose from. The problem is that many of those templates look pretty similar from category to category. It seems like they were built using variations of the same block layout, so they won’t really make your website stand out.

You can edit these templates if you want, but the editing function is quite limited as well. On the free plan, you’ll only get a fraction of Tilda’s 550+ block library, and there isn’t much flexibility in what you can change.

If you opt for the paid plans, you’ll have full run of the block library, which includes full screen covers, background videos, forms, reviews, pricing plans, pop-ups and tooltips, and a custom code editor.

That said, you can add animation to make your website more engaging, which can be a powerful tool to build an interactive website. There is a bit of a learning curve, but Tilda does offer a comprehensive animation tutorial on its website.

All templates are responsive, and you can test and tweak your pages by previewing them in different mobile, tablet, and desktop resolutions.

Powerful Features for Online Stores

Tilda’s web builder features include:

What Tilda might lack in terms of original templates, it more than makes up for when it comes to features. In particular, its online store has everything you need to easily set up your e-commerce site.

Tilda has campaign and promo code management, third-party delivery integrations, order confirmation automation, and a price calculator. For payment, you can connect to Stripe, PayPal, Cloudpayments, and Robokassa, among others.

Another perk is Tilda’s free lead management tool, which keeps track of all your customers and leads. Use this CRM to organize your customers, view order histories, analyze sales, and send correspondence to leads. You can even add team members and set their access level.

Tilda promises search engine indexing right off the bat – although results may vary, and you’ll need to connect your site to the Google Search Console first. In addition to easy Google Analytics integration, Tilda offers the usual SEO-boosting settings, such as customizable title and description tags, sitemap.xml generation, and image compression for faster loading times.

When it comes to third-party integrations, Tilda does a pretty good job. You can connect your site with services like MailChimp, Google Analytics, Trello, and SlideShare. The catch? You’ll have to connect these services manually. Tilda doesn’t have an integrated app market that we see in builders such as Wix. That was a bit of a letdown for me.

You’ll Need Some Experience to Use the Block Editor

Tilda has a fairly user-friendly interface. Its block-based approach definitely streamlines the website creation process, but it does take some time to get used to. If you’re a newbie, it might take a while to figure out all the features. Builders such as Wix are much easier to use.

Tilda mentions that it’s possible to modify any template beyond recognition. But because the block elements are, well, blocks, most templates will still end up having a similar style or structure. To be fair, Tilda does offer comprehensive tutorials to give you some out-of-the-box design ideas.

If you’re a designer and want more control, you can add Zero Block to your website editor. With this feature, you can add animations, work with layers, add interactive elements like tooltips, and control scrolling and highlighting elements. You can also customize and save blocks that you use often.

Tilda offers a preview mode that lets you see how your website will look after publishing. However, if you want to add custom HTML, it’s only rendered on published pages. That means the changes made by custom code won’t reflect in preview mode.

Tilda’s Support Has You Covered… as Long as You Don’t Need to Speak to Anyone

My biggest gripe with Tilda is its customer support. They don’t have phone or chat support, so the only way to speak to someone is via email. The support team is slow to respond, and customer service representatives often provided me with links to articles instead of answering my questions.

Outside of limited support channels and slow response times, Tilda’s customer support portal is packed with comprehensive articles, tutorials, and FAQs. If you get tired of reading, you can also watch step-by-step video tutorials.

Unlike other builders, though, Tilda offers a free and useful Education section with detailed articles on how to build a website, use animation tools, pick effective fonts, and improve SEO.

Tilda operates on a freemium model, meaning it has both free and paid plans. The free plan can be used to create one website, but it has its limitations. For example, you don’t get full access to all the blocks, and each page will have a “Made on Tilda” label by default. Also, you can’t connect to your own domain with a free plan.

If you want more control and full access to features, you can upgrade to a Personal or Business Plan. The Personal Plan is $10.00 per month, while a Business Plan will set you back $20.00 per month when paid annually.

The Personal Plan offers access to the full block library, the ability to add custom code, and integration with several payment systems, but limits you to creating only one website. On the other hand, the Business Plan allows you to create up to 5 websites and provides additional features such as an API for website or WordPress integration, as well as the option to export source code.

If your website needs are uncomplicated and you want to set up an online store or portfolio site on the fly, the Personal Plan, with 1GB of storage and up to 500 pages, is a good value. Otherwise, there are other website builders who will the do job for less.
